LET MY PRAYER ARISE

An incense holder · In formation

Today, I decided it was time to sculpt an Orthodox incense holder. The clay is still wet and cool, and I am steadily carving away.

THE INSCRIPTION

ДА ИСПРА́ВИТСѦМОЛИ́ТВА МОѦ́

Hand-sculpted clay incense holder with an Orthodox cross and Church Slavonic inscription, drying on a studio table beside a carving tool.

Let my prayer arise…

AN ANCIENT CHARACTER

As you will see in my work, I am drawn to forms that feel ancient, archaeological, worn, and ascetic.

Uneven surfaces, rough edges, and dark tones are part of the character I want to give these pieces.

I know this makes my work less familiar.

There is something rewarding about creating an uncommon piece, though it also means accepting that its appearance will not appeal to everyone.

At the end of the day, I follow the forms and textures that move me.

This incense holder comes from that same place: something severe and weathered, as though uncovered after years beneath the earth.

STILL IN CLAY

There is still drying, firing, and glazing ahead.

For now, this piece is greenware, only beginning its journey.

I am already looking forward to opening the kiln and seeing what it becomes.
