SACRED VESSEL No. 14

Unique Work · Handmade Christian Stoneware · 2026

THE WORK

A sculptural Christian stoneware vessel bearing the Jesus Prayer, individually formed and hand carved for DOM VECHERA. SACRED VESSEL No. 14 belongs to THE SACRED, a collection of handmade Christian pottery inspired by ancient Christianity, Orthodox prayer, and the enduring language of faith.

Its deep black surface, irregular silhouette, and broad opening recall an ancient object recovered from the earth. The raised shoulder carries the inscription around the vessel, each letter cut directly into the clay.

A singular work of sacred ceramic art, formed by hand rather than reproduced from a mold.

THE INSCRIPTION

Го́споди Іису́се Христе́, Сы́не Бо́жїй помилуй мя

Gospodi Iisuse Khriste, Syne Bozhiy, pomiluy mya

“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me.”

The Jesus Prayer holds a central place in Orthodox Christian spirituality and the tradition of continual prayer.

Its words encircle the vessel, gradually revealing themselves as the work is turned. The inscription is not applied decoration but an integral part of the ceramic form.

SURFACE & FORM

Finished in deep black, the vessel bears the irregularities of its making. Lighter traces within the carved letters reveal the inscription against the dark surface.

The subtly uneven rim, rounded body, and narrowing base establish a severe, architectural silhouette.

Each variation in form, carving, and surface is particular to this work. No identical edition will be produced.
