Νῆψις is a one-of-a-kind stoneware bowl bearing a single Greek word deeply rooted in the ascetic tradition of the Orthodox Church: Νῆψις — Nepsis, meaning spiritual watchfulness or vigilance.

Within Orthodox spiritual life, nepsis describes the attentive guarding of the heart—the practice of remaining inwardly awake, discerning one's thoughts, and continually turning the mind toward God. Closely associated with the tradition of hesychasm and the writings of the Desert Fathers, it is a discipline of stillness joined with attention.

Created as part of The SACRED COLLECTION, this vessel brings that ancient call to watchfulness into the ordinary act of eating. The simplicity of the bowl and the restraint of its inscription reflect the spirit of fasting itself: less as deprivation than as a return to attention.

The Greek word Νῆψις holds a significant place within Orthodox ascetic theology. It describes a state of spiritual sobriety—an attentive awareness of the movements of the heart and mind.

Throughout the writings preserved within the Orthodox spiritual tradition, watchfulness is closely joined to prayer. The Christian is called to become attentive: to recognize distracting or harmful thoughts as they arise and to return continually to the remembrance of God.

Placed upon a vessel intended for the fasting table, Νῆψις becomes particularly fitting. Orthodox fasting calls not only for restraint in food, but for greater attentiveness to the interior life. The inscription therefore transforms the bowl into a quiet reminder of the deeper purpose toward which fasting is directed.

Surface & Form

Individually formed by hand, this vessel preserves the subtle irregularities and movement of handmade stoneware. Its broad, substantial form is designed for everyday use while retaining the presence of a singular studio object.

The surface is defined by the contrast of Black Walnut and Alabaster, creating an earthy, mineral palette that emphasizes the handmade architecture of the bowl. The Greek inscription is integrated into the vessel itself, allowing sacred language and functional form to exist as a unified composition.

Variations in glaze movement, surface, inscription, and firing remain visible as part of the finished work. No second firing can precisely reproduce these effects, making the vessel singular in both form and surface.
