THE WORK
SACRED VESSEL No.1 THE ASCETIC CUP · No. DV-2026-11 is a one-of-a-kind Orthodox Christian pottery cup, individually formed in stoneware and stamped with the words LORD HAVE MERCY.
Its deeply textured Black Magma exterior recalls weathered cast iron, cooled volcanic stone, and objects transformed by centuries of exposure. Beneath its rugged surface, the vessel remains entirely ceramic, with a contrasting Opal Gloss interior.
Created in April 2026, this early work by the founder of DOM VECHERA brings one of Christianity's most enduring prayers into an object of daily use.
The compact form, cratered surface, and impressed lettering give the cup an archaic, almost excavated character.

THE INSCRIPTION
LORD HAVE MERCY
Among the most frequently repeated prayers of Orthodox Christianity, these words are heard throughout the Divine Liturgy, the daily services of the Church, and personal prayer.
The invocation is an appeal not only for forgiveness but also for God's compassion, healing, protection, and loving-kindness.
Individually stamped into the clay, the lettering carries a restrained, archival character.
The words remain impressed within the stoneware itself, becoming an enduring part of the vessel rather than decoration applied to its surface.
SURFACE & FORM
The exterior is finished in Black Magma, producing a rugged, cratered surface reminiscent of aged cast iron and cooled volcanic rock.
Variations in texture, depth, and mineral movement develop during firing, creating an individual surface that cannot be precisely reproduced.
The contrasting Opal Gloss interior introduces a smooth, reflective finish within the dark exterior.
The cup's compact proportions and substantial silhouette give it the presence of a small archaeological object, while its ceramic construction retains the character of individually formed stoneware.
