The Desert Vessel
Hand-Carved Arabic Orthodox Stoneware Coffee Cup
The Desert Vessel is a one-of-a-kind stoneware cup bearing sacred Arabic script drawn from the prayer and liturgical tradition of the Christian East.
Wrapped in the deep earthen tones of Shino Cacao, the vessel evokes the landscapes of the ancient desert—the wilderness in which generations of Christian ascetics sought silence, prayer, and communion with God. The hand-carved Arabic inscription moves across the surface of the cup as an integral part of the form, carrying the visual language of the Arabic-speaking Orthodox tradition into clay.
Warm, elemental, and intentionally irregular, The Desert Vessel was created as a functional object with the presence of an artifact: a cup intended for daily use, yet shaped to carry something far older than itself.
The Inscription
Arabic inscription is individually carved into the clay, allowing the sacred words to become physically embedded within the vessel rather than applied as surface decoration.
The lettering reflects the visual heritage of Arabic Christian calligraphy and the living tradition of Arabic-speaking Orthodox Christianity. As light moves across the deeply glazed surface, it settles within the carved lines, revealing the inscription through subtle variations of depth and shadow.
Surface & Form
The exterior is enveloped in Shino Cacao, producing a rich spectrum of earthen brown, amber, and dark mineral tones. The natural movement of the glaze creates areas of depth and variation across the handmade surface, giving the vessel the weathered character from which its name is drawn.
The interior provides a lighter contrast to the dark exterior, illuminating the opening of the vessel and emphasizing its substantial handmade form. The individually formed handle carries the same organic glaze movement as the body, preserving the marks and irregularities of the making process.
This work belongs to The SACRED COLLECTION, a curated body of stoneware bearing the Arabic language of the Orthodox Christian East—ancient prayers, liturgical proclamations, and words of Scripture carried into clay.
