THE WORK
SACRED VESSEL No. 06 is a one-of-a-kind Christian pottery vessel, individually formed in stoneware and hand-inscribed with the Arabic words ارحمني يا الله — Have mercy on me, O God.
The inscription recalls the opening plea of Psalm 50 (51), one of the most significant penitential prayers in Orthodox Christian spiritual life.
Its pale, stone-like body rises from a saturated fire-red foundation, creating a striking division of color and form. The deeply carved Arabic lettering, irregular silhouette, and visible traces of the hand give the work an archaic, sculptural character.
Created for the Christian home, the vessel is an expression of repentance, humility, and the enduring Christian appeal for God's mercy.

THE INSCRIPTION
ارحمني يا الله
Irḥamnī yā Allāh
“Have mercy on me, O God.”
The words recall the opening of Psalm 50 (51):
“Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy.”
Psalm 50 occupies a profound place within Orthodox Christian worship and personal prayer. It is a psalm of repentance, confession, humility, and the desire for reconciliation with God.
The Arabic inscription reflects the living traditions of Arabic-speaking Christians, for whom the ancient prayers of the Church remain part of daily spiritual life.
Each letter is carved directly into the clay, making the invocation an enduring part of the vessel rather than an ornament applied to its surface.
SURFACE & FORM
The upper body is finished in Alabaster, creating a pale mineral surface reminiscent of weathered stone and ancient plaster.
Toward the base, the alabaster gives way to a saturated fire-red glaze, producing a pronounced contrast between the restrained upper body and the darker, warmer foundation.
The interior returns to Alabaster, while the individually formed silhouette retains its asymmetry through the body, neck, and rim.
The hand-carved Arabic lettering remains prominent against the pale exterior.
No two surfaces, inscriptions, or silhouettes are identical. Every variation belongs to this individual work.
