THE WORK
SACRED VESSEL No. 04 is a one-of-a-kind Christian pottery vessel, individually formed in stoneware and hand-inscribed with the Arabic words قُدُّوسُ اللهِ — Holy God.
Low and broad in silhouette, the work recalls ancient ceramic forms and fragments of early Christian material culture. Its deeply carved inscription emerges through layers of mineral glaze, creating a weathered surface reminiscent of aged plaster and ancient frescoes.
The irregular profile, visible brushwork, and evidence of the hand remain deliberately preserved, giving the vessel an archaeological character.
Created for the Christian home, the work is a sculptural expression of Orthodox Christian faith and devotion.
It belongs to THE SACRED, the DOM VECHERA collection of handmade Christian stoneware inspired by ancient Christianity, prayer, and devotion.
THE INSCRIPTION
قُدُّوسُ اللهِ
Quddūs Allāh
“Holy God.”
These words open the Trisagion, an ancient hymn central to Orthodox Christian worship:
Holy God. Holy Mighty. Holy Immortal. Have mercy on us.
The Arabic inscription reflects the Christian liturgical traditions of the Middle East, where Orthodox communities have preserved the ancient prayers of the Church for centuries.
Each letter is carved directly into the clay, becoming an enduring part of the vessel rather than an ornament applied to its surface.
SURFACE & FORM
The broad, low silhouette recalls the proportions of ancient ceramic vessels while retaining the irregularity of a form created individually by hand.
Successive layers of mineral-toned glaze produce a weathered, fresco-inspired exterior, with visible variations in brushwork, surface texture, and firing.
The deeply carved Arabic lettering emerges from the worked surface, while the alabaster interior provides a restrained ivory contrast.
No two surfaces, inscriptions, or silhouettes are identical. Every variation belongs to this individual work.
