The Hymn of Glory Greek Orthodox Stoneware

The Hymn of Glory is a one-of-a-kind Greek Orthodox stoneware vase bearing one of the most enduring doxologies of the Orthodox Christian tradition.

Hand carved in Greek, the vessel proclaims:

Δόξα τῷ Θεῷ — Glory to God.

For centuries these words have risen from the lips of the faithful in moments of thanksgiving, repentance, joy, and suffering alike. More than a phrase of gratitude, Glory to God is the Christian confession that every blessing, every mercy, and every good gift finds its source in God Himself.

Created as a decorative vessel, the work is intended to bring this ancient proclamation into the home. Its rounded silhouette and fresco-inspired surface evoke the quiet dignity of an archaeological artifact, as though uncovered from the walls of an ancient monastery, carrying both the permanence of fired stone and the enduring beauty of sacred tradition.

Inscription

Δόξα τῷ Θεῷ

Dóxa tō Theō

Glory to God

This timeless doxology has echoed throughout Orthodox worship for centuries. It is heard in the Divine Liturgy, the daily offices, private prayer, and in the ordinary speech of countless Orthodox Christians who give thanks to God in every circumstance.

Inscribed upon this vessel, these words become a lasting confession of praise, a reminder that all beauty, all life, and every blessing ultimately belong to God.

Surface and Form

The vessel's gently swelling form recalls ancient ceramic jars while remaining unmistakably handmade. Its proportions create a quiet balance between strength and simplicity, allowing the carved inscription to become the visual center of the work.

The exterior was built through successive hand-painted layers of Alabaster, Black Walnut, Candy Apple Red, Brown and Tan tweed and Iron Wash, creating a fresco-inspired mineral surface that recalls weathered church walls and centuries-old iconographic plaster. Soft transitions, exposed brushwork, and naturally varied firing effects give the vessel the appearance of an object shaped by both time and fire.

The deeply carved Greek inscription emerges from these layered surfaces with quiet clarity, preserving the visual rhythm of Byzantine lettering while allowing the painterly finish to remain expressive.

The interior continues the same harmonious palette, finished with Black Walnut, allowing the vessel to feel complete from every angle.

Every variation left by carving, glaze movement, brushwork, and firing is intentionally preserved, ensuring that this remains a singular work of ceramic art.

This work belongs to The Sacred Collection, a curated body of stoneware bearing the sacred language of Greek Orthodox Christianity through Scripture, liturgical hymns, prayers, and ancient proclamations carried into clay.
