THE WORK
SACRED VESSEL No. 02 is a one-of-a-kind Christian pottery vessel, individually formed in stoneware and hand-inscribed with the Trisagion Prayer in Arabic.
Its weathered surface recalls ancient Christian frescoes, aged plaster, and the timeworn architecture of the Christian East. Layers of glaze and iron wash create an excavated appearance, while the irregular rim, carved inscription, and traces of the hand remain deliberately visible.
Created for the Christian home, the vessel is both a sculptural object and an expression of ancient Orthodox Christian faith.
It belongs to THE SACRED, the DOM VECHERA collection of handmade Christian stoneware inspired by ancient Christianity, prayer, and devotion.
THE INSCRIPTION
قُدُّوسُ الله • قُدُّوسُ الْقَوِيُّ • قُدُّوسُ الَّذِي لَا يَمُوتُ • ارْحَمْنَا
“Holy God. Holy Mighty. Holy Immortal. Have mercy on us.”
Known as the Trisagion, meaning “Thrice Holy,” this ancient Christian prayer holds a central place in Orthodox worship and is recited throughout the liturgical life of the Church.
The Arabic inscription reflects the living traditions of Arabic-speaking Orthodox Christians of the Middle East.
Each letter is carved directly into the clay, making the prayer an enduring part of the vessel rather than a decoration applied to its surface.
SURFACE & FORM
Successive layers of thinned glaze are applied by hand to create a weathered, fresco-like exterior reminiscent of ancient Christian architectural fragments.
Iron wash settles into the carved Arabic inscription, tool marks, and irregularities of the clay, leaving darker traces and restrained warmth across the surface.
The alabaster interior, touched with subtle iron wash, provides a quiet ivory contrast to the heavily worked exterior.
No two surfaces, inscriptions, or silhouettes are identical. Every variation belongs to this individual work.
