SACRED VESSEL No. 01
SACRED VESSEL No. 01

THE WORK
SACRED VESSEL No. 01 is a one-of-a-kind Christian pottery vessel, individually formed in stoneware and hand-inscribed with the Jesus Prayer in Greek.
Its weathered surface recalls ancient Christian frescoes, aged plaster, and fragments of sacred architecture. Layers of glaze and iron wash reveal an irregular silhouette, deeply carved lettering, and the unmistakable evidence of the hand.
Created for the Christian home, the work is both a sculptural object and a quiet expression of Orthodox Christian faith.
It belongs to THE SACRED, the DOM VECHERA collection of handmade Christian stoneware inspired by ancient Christianity, prayer, and devotion.
THE INSCRIPTION
Κύριε Ἰησοῦ Χριστέ, Υἱὲ Θεοῦ, ἐλέησόν με
Kýrie Iēsoû Christé, Huiè Theoû, eléēsón me
“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me.”
The Jesus Prayer has held a central place in Orthodox Christian spiritual life for centuries, particularly within the traditions of hesychasm and continual prayer.
Each Greek letter is carved directly into the clay, making the prayer an enduring part of the vessel rather than a decoration applied to its surface.
SURFACE & FORM
The exterior is developed through successive layers of thinned glaze and iron wash, producing a weathered, fresco-like finish reminiscent of excavated Christian artifacts.
Iron settles into the hand-carved inscription, tool marks, and irregularities of the clay, creating darker traces across the surface.
The alabaster interior provides a restrained contrast to the aged exterior.
No two surfaces, inscriptions, or silhouettes are identical. Every variation belongs to this individual work.
